What Is Wrong With Alex Smith Leg? Injury And Health Update On American Football Quarterback

Former football quarterback Alex Smith reportedly suffered a fatal injury to his right leg during his first season with Washington. The threatening leg injury nearly resulted in the amputation.

Kansas City traded Smith in exchange for cornerback Kendall Fuller to the Washington Redskins and a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The quarterback signed a four-year deal worth $ 94 million with them.

He suffered a spiral and compound fracture in the fibula of his right leg and tibia. Smith suffered injury when Kareem Jackson and JJ Watt fired him during a game against the Houston Texans November 18, 2018.

The quarterback developed threatening necrotizing fasciitis which resulted in sepsis. Sepsis required him to undergo 17 surgeries, including eight debridements, in four separate hospital stays for more than nine months.

Doctors have suggested to Smith that an above knee amputation may be the only option for the quarterback. They urged amputation before performing skin grafts and a muscle transfer operation from the left quadriceps to save him.

The QB has been wearing an external fastener as part of its recovery process for nearly a year. During the recovery period, the Redskins put him on the reserve list of physically unable to perform (PUP) in 2019.

In early 2020, Smith stated his intention to return regardless of the severity of the injury. However, he has disproved anyone who thought the quarterback would never return with his return from injury in 2020 against the Los Angeles Rams.
